Our benefit is helping raise funds for the purchase of the 235-acre Kopp property, which will provide a key link between thousands of acres of protected land. The property is forested and contains ponds, streams, vernal pools and wetlands. The property supports a wide diversity of wildlife including black bear, eastern coyote, bobcat, red and gray fox, white-tailed deer, porcupine, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, wood thrush, Cooper’s hawk, wood frog, red-spotted newt, and spotted salamander. Additionally, ten rare species have been documented on or near the property: Silver-haired bat, Red bat, Hoary bat, Slimy sculpin, Sharp-lobed hepatica, Summer sedge, Squirrel corn, Goldie’s fern, Skunk currant, and Canada violet. Aside from the abundance of wildlife and nature, the property's proximity to Winchester and Torrington will help the economically distressed communities enjoy its trails and the preservation of this property will support clean water, clean air and carbon sequestration for both the immediate communities as well as the entire state.
